Killdeer giving a distraction display at Marble Rose Farm - Photo by Warren King

Sue Evans, who grows organic produce at Marble Rose Farm in East Middlebury, reports her second year asparagus field is producing well, but not the way she anticipated. As spears started to break the soil surface she noted a Killdeer pair had taken up residence there. She opted not to harvest the field, a light harvest being advised in any case the year after planting asparagus, in the hope of growing Killdeer instead. She reports on June 24th that four Killdeer youngsters are now foraging for insects in the field alongside their two parents.
