An aberrant plumaged Red-tailed Hawk - Photos by Gary Starr

Gary Starr took these pictures of a mostly white Red-tailed Hawk on Ridge Rd. in Cornwall this morning. Due to its coloring, one might be tempted to call this bird an albino, but true albinos lack any pigment at all. This one does have some pigmented feathers so the proper term for it is Leucistic. If it was a true albino, that might have made the identification more tricky with only shape size and posture to go on as field marks, but this one made things a bit easier by obligingly showing a tell-tale rufous tail feather. Gary was informed about this bird by local residents and was told that it had been in the area for about a week.
