A Downy Woodpecker catching some Zs.

A Downy Woodpecker catching some Zs.

This picture comes from Chip Mayer from her home on the east side of Chipman Hill in Middlebury. It’s a Downy Woodpecker with its head tucked in and feathers puffed up taking a nap right on the feeder. Chip reports that this bird takes regular snoozes like this. If you are wondering how you can tell it is a Downy rather than a Hairy Woodpecker from this picture, the small black spots on the outer tail feathers are distinct to Downys.
