A Four-toed Salamander crossing Morgan Rd.

A Four-toed Salamander crossing Morgan Rd.

Friday, April 12, OCAS held the second of our Salamander Escort events for 2012 at Morgan Rd. in Salisbury. Eight people came out on a very cool evening despite threats of possible poor road conditions. The amphibians appeared to be heeding the weather warnings as well, producing only a very small movement of 27 in total. All of the expected salamander species were represented though, with Four-toed, Red-backed, Spotted, and Blue-Spotted Salamanders and a road-killed Eastern Newt all observed at the crossing. Frogs were very much in absent however, with the calls of a few Spring Peepers in the distance as evidence of their presence.

This concludes our Salamander Escort program for this spring, but we hope to be back again year for another two nights of  amphibian action on Morgan Rd.
